Why Can’t I Remember?

Every had one of that moment when you ask yourself, why can’t I remember? You’ll go into a room with the full intention to get something  or to pick something up and then when you enter the room, you stand there for a second and all of a sudden your mind draws a complete blank and you can’t remember what you came into the room to get in the first place.

Sounds familiar?  This is more common than you would believe. Many, many women suffer from memory loss, women in the 30’s and up and even some younger ladies experience short term memory loss.  This is sometimes if not the majority of the times due to anemia. The loss of blood during the menstrual cycle or just low iron for some other reason.

You would think by the time a woman reaches the age of 50 and older and is no longer experiencing menstruation that this symptom would cease to exist, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.  There are women who have never resolved the issue of low iron and continued on into their 50’s only to find it has gotten worse.

It doesn’t really help with the fact that now one of the many symptoms of menopause is memory loss for those women who are experiencing the change.  When women experience menopause there is less estrogen and progesterone in the brain.

Research shows that estrogen may help the neurotransmitter systems send signals to the brain areas involved in memory and information processing.  So less estrogen? Well, you can do the math.  Some researchers think that estrogen promotes the growth and survival of neurons, this is the cells that send electrical impulses.  Now, these impulses are the messages that are extremely important for making the brain and nervous system work properly.

Listed below are a few helpful hints to the common question, “why can’t I remember? this can help reverse memory loss:

  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule, including on the weekends.
  • Reduce your caffeine intake.
  • Keep your bedroom cool, and consider placing a fan nearby.
  • Purchase a cooling pad or pillows with cooling elements.
  • Make sure your room is as dark as possible.
  • Learn relaxation techniques, such as mindful meditation or yoga.
  • Exercise, but not right before bedtime.
  • Wear bedclothes made of natural fibers, such as cotton, hemp, linen, or silk.
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, and spicy foods.

You will definitely hear this if you haven’t already that memory loss is due largely to getting older. But this is not always case my mother is 80yrs young and I swear her memory is better than mine.

So, I will only agree with this statement if you are not introducing a clean and healthy diet along with a healthy lifestyle. Yeah, your memory will not be the best because your body is lacking certain nutrients.  Your diet at this stage of the game is extremely important.  If you want to stop repeating to yourself  “Why can’t I remember things from the past” or “I can’t remember what I did yesterday”, make a change.  Asking yourself these questions should raise concern.

There are many women with sharper memories and who are more alert compared to women far younger.  Memory loss can be reversed with a clean nutritious diet, predominantly plant-based, if not all plant-based as well as doing exercising the mind, i.e. certain mind games, reading , etc.  Some people may have a difficult time with a change in diet, and that’s ok.  Change for some requires self-discipline.

Everything takes time and if you rush the process you may regret it in the end.  So the next time you ask yourself, “why can’t I remember?” you will know why. My advice to would be to take the healthier lifestyle at your own pace.
